backyard makeover

This weekend, everyone in the house pulled together to build an outdoor kitchen. My coworker Brett and I designed the slatted wall and butcher counter together, and Adam's new grill was delivered just as we completed the build.

We built a 2x4 gridwork on the wall and stained some deck lumber to match our Ikea table.
We used terra cotta tiles behind the grill to protect the house from heat, and added a planter box to the wood slat portion for herbs. We installed a farmhouse sink with a disposal on the side of the counter so we can cook entire meals outside.
Our friend Doug is a landscape architect, and he designed this planter for us last year. It runs the entire length of our yard, and the low maintenance prairie plants completely conceal the lattice by the end of the summer.

We all chipped in to get Adam a projector and screen for his birthday, so we can screen movies at night and make popcorn on the new grill.
